Between the Moments of a Memory

I close my eyes

Mind wandering in peaceful darkness,

Through time and space

It slides between the moments

of a long-forgotten memory

To watch the unfolding of history.

Back and forth between

What is and what was

I ponder the unknown,

What part does this

Isolated puzzle piece

Play in the world I’ve created?

How would life have been reordered

In its absence.

While speculation replaces fact

Wishful thinking supersedes certainty.

In the end, I must acknowledge

The past is immutable

In spite of what my dreams say.
