His Spirit Lingers

Exhaustion fills my heart
Despair and hopelessness surround
Helpless to intervene, or change the path
I watch as his final arguments are made

Don’t take on his pain she said
But his spirit cries out, his haunted gaze
Piercing the fog
The sorrow envelops my soul

He couldn’t find peace
And love couldn’t save him
From the emptiness of his space
He calls out for understanding

His pain hangs in the air
Still unresolved
Was there no peace in the darkness?
No quiet among the stars?

He is lost to the future
Secured forever to the past
With the history written
He asks for forgiveness

Can they forgive him?
Those left behind
Could they ever understand?
Can they ever find peace?
